The Health Coach is responsible for delivering superior quality health coaching services to current and potential members, including the community. These services primarily center on presentations, health exhibits, multi-session programming and individualized health coaching at the Capital Blue Cross Connect Health and Wellness Centers. This position initiates and reinforces community-oriented health education activities by serving as a respected Capital Connect representative. The Health Coach may also provide health coaching and other health and wellness related services to employer group customers. The Health Coach evaluates existing program content, gaps in service offerings, and develops novel wellness related programming within the Capital Connect centers as part of the Health Promotion and Wellness department. This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities or direct reports; however, this individual provides feedback to the Manager and Sr. Director within the Health Promotion and Wellness unit to support health education initiatives. This input is primarily related to continuing trends in health education and wellness, evaluation of internal services, and meaningful proposals for new programs and services.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Operational Activities: Delivers specific health coaching, health education services, and multi-session programs. Assists as directed with creation of programs and services that address new topics in health promotion and wellness under the direction of the Manager of Health Promotion & Wellness. Supports health coaching services to members providing expertise for fitness assessments, personal training, general nutrition (Registered Dietitians are the only staff permitted to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy), and general health topics. Delivers health information through exhibits and presentations, as assigned by Manager in professional and timely manner. Supports Plan’s marketing efforts through assisting in the design and preparation of materials for health promotion and wellness activities. Collaborates with other internal departments to effectively position health promotion and wellness as a “value-added” service to the customer. Refers members to applicable Capital programs and services in an effort to improve health, close gaps in care, and promote Capital tools and resources.
  • Quality/Program Delivery: Reviews all health promotion and wellness programs and literature as appropriate to validate content, clarity and appropriateness for target audiences. Provides feedback from customers to Senior Health Education Consultant on delivered health education and wellness programs and services. Elevates identified issues/concerns from customers to supervisor in timely manner. Identifies quality issues impacting lifestyle management programs, recommending and potentially implementing steps to resolve issues. Offers suggestions for improvement in departmental processes. Employs workload management strategies to complete assignments within established timelines for projected service delivery.
  • Evaluation & Reporting: Manages data and compiles reports on delivered health promotion and wellness programs and health coaching services conducted at Capital Connect or employer locations if applicable. Documents all health education activities in employer group database in accordance with established policies and desktop procedures. Delivers comprehensive activity reports to Manager.
  • Unit & Administrative: Assists in ordering supplies for health and wellness services offered at Capital Connect. Ensures all policies and procedures regarding PA DOH lab license and CLIA waiver are in accordance with CMS and DOH regulations.
  • Accurately document all member interactions in current member management system in a timely fashion. Complies with Health Promotion & Wellness policies and procedures.
  • Assists in orientation / development of peers.
  • Maintains professionalism throughout interactions with all internal and external customers.
  • Attends and regularly participates in all internal meetings ensuring communication of ongoing activities.
  • Carries out responsibilities in timely and accurate fashion, and in accordance with corporate and unit policies/procedures.

Skills:

  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Demonstrates tact and diplomacy when communicating with members, employer groups, marketing, and other members of the population health management team.
  • Be available to participate in outreach events during non-standard business hours as directed by management.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer (PC), including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to easily navigate virtual options of program delivery for employer groups.

Knowledge:

  • Health education knowledge, typically gained from a bachelor’s degree program in health education or related field, from an accredited college or university along with 1-3 years of experience as a health educator, preferably in a market-driven environment.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues regarding worksite health promotion, health risk behaviors, health care costs and consumer issues.
  • Knowledge of behavior modification techniques and interventions designed to facilitate lifestyle behavior changes and increase employee participation in health promotion activities as well as knowledge of principles of adult education and group dynamics.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques used to communicate educational information to the public or employees.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills enabling employee to successfully work on multiple assignments as well as an ability to effectively plan work and manage time, responsibilities, and assignments.
  • Knowledge and ability to exercise independent and sound judgment.

Experience:

  • Experience in creating and presenting oral and written lifestyle improvement programs.

Education and Certifications:

  • Prefer Personal Training Certification
  • Prefer health coaching certification from an accredited organization.
  • Registered Dietitian license needed for providing Medical Nutrition Therapy. This is not a requirement for this position but would be considered a plus.
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Location:

  • This position requires working onsite Monday, Wednesday & Friday in the York Capital Blue Cross Connect Health and Wellness Center and onsite Tuesday & Thursday in the Chambersburg Connect Health and Wellness Center.
