The Tax Accountant III position is a critical member of the corporate tax team with responsibilities in the areas of Tax Compliance, Tax Accounting, and Tax Planning and Research.

This team member supports the Corporate Tax Department by participating in assignments related to the above areas as well as special projects.

The majority of time will be spent on tax compliance and provisions, but independent research and consulting will be necessary. Key responsibilities include examining the tax ramifications of transactions and discussing various consequences, reading and applying tax laws and regulations, searching out and evaluating options, computing taxes, completing tax returns, and collaborating with team members.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Compliance. Prepares and contributes to federal and state income tax returns including collecting and analyzing financial data, calculating book/tax differences, and preparing supporting work papers. Prepares and files federal and state income tax returns. Prepares estimated tax payments and extensions. Prepares miscellaneous non-income tax returns, as assigned. Assists with other tax compliance projects as needed, including supporting federal and state examinations.
  • Accounting. Prepares GAAP and Statutory financial statement tax provisions including the supporting deferred tax calculation for GAAP and Statutory purposes, tax disclosures and footnotes for GAAP and Statutory financial statements, and quarterly tax accounts reconciliations. Gathers, organizes, and prepares data in support of the various tax provision processes. Contributes to forecasting effective tax rates. Interacts with accounting firms on GAAP and Statutory tax provisions, footnotes and disclosures.
  • Tax Planning, Research, and Special Projects. Assists other tax department personnel with special projects including, including but not limited to, developing tax, GAAP, and STAT accounting positions, policies, and procedures. Provides timely, quality, and innovative tax consulting services on a variety of topics as assigned. Contributes to tax planning and tax research projects. Prepares and/or contributes to the development of tax technical memorandums/position papers as assigned. Participates in cross-functional teams representing the Corporate Tax Department on both Finance and Company-wide initiatives. Supports federal and state audits by researching and developing responses to Information Document Requests. Assists other Corporate Tax Department team members as needed. Stays current by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical material, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.

Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products with an emphasis on Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to excel in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of company personnel regarding accounting and financial information.
  • Must be organized, flexible and possess a strong focus in order to meet deadlines consistently.
  • Ability to adapt to changing workloads and priorities and complete assignments with a minimum level of daily supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail while producing accurate and high-quality work.

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of tax law
  • Working knowledge of tax accounting concepts
  • Experience with Workday
  • Experience with Clearwater
  • Preferred: Experience with Corptax Compliance and Provision
  • SSAP 101 and ASC 740 knowledge
  • 1120PC familiarity

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years' corporate income tax experience in a corporate tax environment or public accounting firm.
  • Preferred: Big 4 Accounting Firm tax experience
  • Experience with corporate income tax compliance/provision
  • Preferred:  Blue Cross Blue Shield or other Insurance Industry taxation experience
  • Requires multi-state tax experience
  • Information Reporting experience
  • Fixed Asset/Depreciation background

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • Preferred: Certified Public Accountant
  • Master’s degree in taxation

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands and fingers, talk, hear, and see.
  • The employee must be able to work over 40 hours per week.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 5 pounds.
